The Great Plant Stand

The Great Plant Stand

Hello Everyone!

This post is a bit late, but here it is.

Well it’s the time of year again for gardening… And as you can see I had a huge lack of space! No home for my garden seedlings. Luckily, spring cleaning happened in my office and they had some leftover planks.

So we had the shelving and just needed some supports. The hubs found affordable wood stringers, legs and angle brackets.

End of Day 1: We put in most of the work on this project on day 1. At this point it was a bit unstable and had a nice tilt to it, so we left it against the wall.

End of Day 2: One more shelf. Now it was more stable.

FIN: …And we are done!

Cost breakdown:

4 structural legs $10/piece = $40

8 stringers $1.30/board = $10.40

Angle brackets $3 for 4, used 8 per shelf. Total = $24

Total spent = $74.40

Total savings for four 6 foot planks about $60.

Not a bad price for a solid wooden piece of furniture.

Happy DIY-ing!

The Accidental Great Succulent Propagation (sort-of)

Standard

Ah, so you know when you just nudge your perfectly symmetrical succulent with a little force and POOF no longer the perfect specimen that lives in every homemakeover show/magazine/blog post.

Well it turns out most of these “arms” broke off perfectly! I had no idea my succulents could get any more adorable. (Can you tell I love them? Haha) I’ve been keeping them next to the window on moist soil that I spray at least once a week (depending on how dry the air is). It’s certainly takes a while (months) but this is what a few of them look like now:

Next step, when to put them in soil…

Pyrex & Plants

Pyrex & Plants

This summer I had a goal to start a balcony garden for as cheaply as possible. So I searched the apartment for any containers I already had lying around. Sadly I had many vintage Pyrex and other ceramics just collecting dust. So, I figure why not use them as planters or water pans. They add lots of character & are more affordable than planters from the box stores. Just be sure to add a layer of drainage to the bottom of the container (see the small gravel stone in the first picture).

Here’s a sample of what I have so far:

Transformation – odd birdcage to multiple planters

Standard

Hi Everyone – it’s been a while! Today I bring you a story of a birdcage. I found this funny shaped one at a garage sale a few years ago and in all that time I have tried to find a purpose for it. I tried storing books or having it as something pretty to look at above my kitchen cabinets. Nothing ever clicked. Then I really looked at the shape of this thing and thought “this would make great planters – I just need to break it apart”. So I did! and it’s got a purpose now.  It just needs some hanging planter liner and rope. I can’t wait to get some flowers in these beautiful planters and show you the final product! Cheers.   ~K

(Sorry for the crappy picture – overhead lighting is the worst)

Wow! It’s been a year. Now back to yard sales and gardening!

Hi Everyone,

I can’t believe it but it has been a whole year since I posted! Time flies! School has kept me really busy and away from all the amazing yard sales and flea markets. Luckily, I had a chance this past weekend and found a few random pieces for my apartment. Yard sales are great places to find simple or, in this case, unique frames.

They are also good places to find handbags! This tote has been great for work and my internship. It has enough room for all the essentials plus a notebook, tablet and water for days out in the field.

I also had the chance to pick up a few plants and seeds to begin my garden. Don’t let living in an apartment stop you! Just get a few boxes and mount them on either your balcony or, in my case, a small deck.
